On the very left side you can read the name on a sign &#8222;Grenzkontrollstelle <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gro\u00dfgmain\">Grossgmain<\/a>&#8220; (so the picture was taken from the Austrian side). In the middle of the picture you can see a signpost with the emblem of Bavaria (the Bavarian part of the village is called &#8222;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bayerisch_Gmain\">Bayerisch Gmain<\/a>&#8222;). Both border stations are in use and you had to show your id card to each station if you wanted to cross the border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That all went away when Europe finally got their act together and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Schengen_Agreement\">abolished (some) borders<\/a>.
